Here's a few pics from the well attended event last Saturday. It was beautiful weather that day, in the middle 70's and a clear bright sky. The crowd was quite large with smiles all around. The entire square was filled for the Dedication of The Veterans Monument. It was nice to see some life in the old town once more.
Folks watching the parade. More pics of the weekend can be seen at the excellent site Clarksville Pa.
This was, to me, the most memorable sight of the day. This gentleman made a sign to honor his friend or relative that was killed in Viet-Nam. The sign reads : " In Memory Of Private B. A. McClellan , Born March 18, 1944, Killed In Action March 27, 1966, Vietnamese Highlands ". The name of Brent A McClellan is on the monument.
The Clarksville Book is nearly sold out, but more have been ordered. If you want to get a copy, send an email with your request to rossmarodi@bentcom.net
I was born at Clarksville in the house my grandfather built and in my parent's bed (thank you Doctor Cott, for making house calls back then) about 200 feet from Ten Mile Creek and I can see the creek outside my window as I write this. As many young people from this area have done, I left "as soon as I could" and stayed away for several years. I have always retained a great love for and interest in the area , it's history and it's people. Along my way I have collected old photos, artifacts and information that I intend to share here.
I am not an expert, only a student. If any thing posted here is found to be incorrect I would appreciate having it brought to my attention for correction. I try only to state positively that which I know to be true. I often update and add information on older posts so if one post has interest to you it may be worth your time to check it again occasionally. If you have any old photos I would love to see them and I may post them on here to share with others, with your permission. Any photos or images of artifacts of Ten Mile and surrounding areas will be gratefully considered for possible inclusion here. Especially desired are photos of stores, hotels, taverns, trains, boats, coal mines and bridges and photos of people working and playing.
Ten Mile Creek Country is meant to celebrate this area and especially the working people who dug and moved the coal and made the coke which made the iron and steel from which everything was made in this country.
