About This Blog

I was born at Clarksville in the house my grandfather built and in my parent's bed (thank you Doctor Cott, for making house calls back then) about 200 feet from Ten Mile Creek and I can see the creek outside my window as I write this. As many young people from this area have done, I left "as soon as I could" and stayed away for several years. I have always retained a great love for and interest in the area , it's history and it's people. Along my way I have collected old photos, artifacts and information that I intend to share here.

I am not an expert, only a student. If any thing posted here is found to be incorrect I would appreciate having it brought to my attention for correction. I try only to state positively that which I know to be true. I often update and add information on older posts so if one post has interest to you it may be worth your time to check it again occasionally. If you have any old photos I would love to see them and I may post them on here to share with others, with your permission. Any photos or images of artifacts of Ten Mile and surrounding areas will be gratefully considered for possible inclusion here. Especially desired are photos of stores, hotels, taverns, trains, boats, coal mines and bridges and photos of people working and playing.

Ten Mile Creek Country is meant to celebrate this area and especially the working people who dug and moved the coal and made the coke which made the iron and steel from which everything was made in this country.

We're Stll Here

One hundred nineteen years after our founding, we are still here and still standing up for working families. After all the battles, strikes and lockouts, we are still here. After losing 100,000 killed in mine disasters and another 100,000 killed by black lung, we are still here. We’ve been shot, maimed, burned, beaten, thrown out of our houses, blacklisted, buried alive–but we’re still here. - United Mine Workers of America International President Cecil E. Roberts 2009
